Set on the edge of the Canadian Shield, Calabogie Peaks is surrounded by rolling mountains, pristine lakes, and endless trails — a landscape perfectly planned by nature. Just one hour from Ottawa and close to Kingston, Montreal, and Toronto, it feels both connected and a world away.
The name Calabogie is believed to come from the Gaelic word for “marsh or bogs.” In the 1800s, this area became one of North America’s most sought-after regions for commercial lumbering, with generations of lumberjacks — known as “shanty men” — working the harsh forests and rushing rivers.
In the 20th century, the Black Donald Mine, just west of Calabogie, became Canada’s most important source of graphite, producing 90% of the country’s supply during the world wars. Though the mine closed in 1954, its story remains a powerful part of the region’s history — one of resilience, resourcefulness, and renewal.
